Addition Algorithm – Using Decimals

LI: How to add decimal numbers, using algorithms.

For this math lesson we have been continuing on to learn about how to do basic math with decimals like addition, subtraction, ect, but in this particular lesson about decimals we started off with learning how to add decimals together. To also do this task you have to sort out the place values of each number from tens, ones, tenths, hundredths, thousandths, and more, while everytime you add the chosen numbers you have to always start from the number farthest to the right working your way up to the left. Another thing to remember when doing this maths calculation is to always carry the ones to the correct place holders and a very simple trick to do this is to make your working out very neat and tidy, so it will be easier to look at and figure it out. Something I found interesting was we learnt how to add numbers using decimal points, and we learnt a rule while adding decimal numbers is that you always have to line up the decimal points with each other.

Provacation

LI: To form and justify an opinion

We explored what a provocation is and why it is important to have an informed opinion when sharing our perspectives. Our provocation was ‘Should Matariki be a public holiday?’ and we shared to each other about our informed and uniformed opinon about ‘Should Matariki be a public holiday’. In our uniformed opinon we thought Matariki should be a holiday because it celebrates the past to the future, and also celebrates the Maori new year. I found this task interesting because it made us reflect on our past and what our ancestors have done for us continuing onto the future.

Taranaki – Cinquian Poem

LI: To write a multi verse cinquain poem that describes the journey of a sleeping maunga that erupts

We have been exploring cinquain poems. A cinquain poem has 5 lines but are not sentences. Each line has a different purpose. Line 1 is a noun which is a name basically something you can touch for example a table. Line 2 has 2 adjectives that describe the noun your talking about. Line 3 has 3 verbs that end in ‘ing’ and describe the actions. Line 4 is a noun phrase which is a group of words (not a sentence) that go together to describe the noun. Line 5 is a synonym which is a word with a similar meaning to the noun. Without repeating words you’ve used before.

We used our poem to show our understanding of volcanoes. In parteners or a group of three we got to choose a volcano, this means we could choose a volcano around the world. Me and my partner Amorangi chose to do Taranaki. We were describing the form of a volcano for example how it sleeps, when it wakes up, then when it erupts, and then lastly the after damages, it may seem easy but really its challenging.

Something I found interesting about cinquain poems is that you have to have exactly 5 lines, you cant make it below or over the 5 lines.

Data Analysis

For this research assignment we had been given the task of reating a DLO explaiining how we analysis the data which had been created by LS2 ourselves and the topic for our data was ‘ Why LS2 are Absent ‘ leading to sickness being the highest/main reason why we don’t come to school while the lowest reason was ‘ I Don’t Like The Teacher’ which is a very bad reason to be at school ! I found that this was a cool assignment to do!

Highest Common Factors (HCF)

LI: How to identify the highest Common factor.

For number knowledge in maths, we have been learning how to identify what Highest Common Factors are. How to do this task you would need to use your multiplication skills (calculator), and find all the factors of the two numbers , after this you need to find the highest common factor out of both of these numbers for e.g ; 12, 24’s highest factor is 12 because if you multiply 12 by 2 it would equal to 24 therefore being the HCF ! Also during this lesson we also learnt how to do prime factorisation because it connects to HCF and also because recently we had been learning prime numbers ! I liked learning this and  I also can’t wait to learn more things !

Prime and Composite

For this activity we have been learning about Prime and Composite numbers, this helps us tell the difference between Prime and Composite numbers. What helps us tell the difference between a Prime and Composite number is that Prime numbers are numbers that can be divded by 1 and itself, therefore Composite numbers are numbers that can be divded out evenly (mostly likely end with 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and so on). The only even prime number is 2 because a prime number is a whole number greater then 1 that has only two factors (1 and itself). I enjoyed learning the difference between Prime and Composite because it was challenging at first but then once I got used to it I enjoyed how fun it was.

Why Maungarei sleeps – Pourquoi story

A long, long time ago when the dinosaurs used to roam around, there was Maungarei, the fire mountain who was bad tempered. She was a powerful warrior who always stood tall. She exploded in fury when she was woken from her slumber, with her rage that always took over her emotions. As she let her anger take over she rumbled sending other maungas around her in all directions. They knew it was time to take cover before she was surrounded by a smoke screen of fury. Maungarei soon came to her senses and tried to make up with everyone as she realised how bad the damage was caused by her anger. She now still feels lonely regretting everything she has done. She always used to let her rage take over her emotions. She was unable to control her outbursts when someone would annoy her because she was hurt and jealous from always being left out. She was surrounded by her siblings who all ignored her and put their attention on the youngest of the family. She felt more and more angry that she was the middle child and always wondered why no one would understand her and make rangitoto the favourite of the family. She was always moody because of being left out.  After she realised how much of a mess she has caused from her anger she released her temper, until one day she regretted every decision she made and felt sorry for how badly she treated her siblings. She noticed that there was one person that never left.

That person said “ The best way to predict your future is to create it, right now you can create your peace but in saying that you need to apologise to your siblings”

with regret in her eyes she replied “ i’m sorry mum, I didn’t mean to affect yous all I wanted was a friend I felt so left out everyone was favoriting Rangitoto”

Mum“ its alright my darling, make peace while you can”

Then Maungarei created peace with her siblings and apologised. She chose to control her anger and now she rests peacefully.Maungarei now sleeps everyday, she improves her anger and she now rests soothingly and tall, she is seen throughout Tamaki Makaurau. From now on it gets really quiet and her siblings are lonely without her around they miss her anger issues. Ever since then no one lives in fear and people who called Maungarei home used the scars of her past fury to plant their kakano. Maungarei temple lies in her volcanic heart, whilst the whenua and her whanau are at peace her eyes remain closed but we should all remind each other of a heart that still beats.

Adobe express generated photo:

For this task we have been learning about pourquoi story. What is a pourquoi story you may ask? a Pourquoi story is a strong connection to a certain culture that explains why things are the way they are, or how something is the way they are, they are very creative and they should create answers to questions. For example ” Why is the sky blue?” a pourquoi story makes creative answers and it might be a cultural belief on the answer or it could be an creative answer. I created a text explaining about why Maungarei sleeps? For each paragraph we had a limit of time to finish that paragraph, for my story I made sure I used punctuations, powerful words, and dialogues. We used Adobe Express after we completed our story to generate an image by using prompts that we write down in our own words. I chose this image because it paints an image by just looking at the picture and reading the texts. To generate this image, I wrote “Peaceful volcanic guardian mountain, with eyes and mouth that are closed with rocks flowing out of the foreground at sunrise“. I enjoyed this task because it was a fun task and I got to get creative with this.

Volcanic eruption

For inquiry we learned about volcanoes and what the different types are. What causes a volcanic eruption? The volcano erupts when 2 tectonic plates crash and touch each other that can make the magma rise to the Earth’s surface which can rise and flow out onto the flat surface of land (that can cause damage to buildings and people, etc…). While it’s erupting, the gas goes everywhere including it going higher than the clouds are usually at. Once the pressure is high enough, the magma erupts which could push through the volcano’s vent. What are the 4 types/differences of volcanoes? The 4 types of volcanoes are shield, cinder cone, composite (another word is stratovolcanoes and lava domes. I enjoyed doing this task because we got to understand how volcanoes erupt and learn what its caused by.

Diary WW1

LI: To retell an event in history through the fictional eyes of someone who was there

For literacy we have been looking at the events that took place at ANZAC during WW1. We reaserched photos and saw many awful things the soldiers had to go through in war, we also looked at videos of what life was like in the trenches, we also explored Walking with ANZACS website and we read Hami Grace’s diary. Doing this helped us create our own diarys and helped us create an image of what we thought WW1 was like. Once our diary was done we got great feedback from Mrs Anderson, after we used Google vids to recorded our diary, I enjoyed this because it helped me learn about history and what happened in the past.

Time Traveller’s Podcast ft Samuel Marsden

For this activity we were challenged to create a podcast about Reverend Samuel Marsden. We have used our Inquiry knowledge to help us write questions that we might have asked Reverend Samuel Marsden as if we were talking to him. On Adobe Express we used the Podcast tool to record our voices and script we collaborated together and had created. For our roles Armani and Amorangi was Samuel Marsden, and the hosts were Jaeliyah, Hasna, and Valencia. I enjoyed doing this fun activity because we all got turns in taking part and we joined our knowledge of Samuel Marsden together and it helped us get more understandment.

I learnt while doing this task was to always use expression in what your saying because it makes it sound better and be confident because if your not confident no one will hear you speak up.
