Octopus Oddities – Kick Start

For this Summer Learning Journey Kickstart activtywe got to get creative and use a colouring webstie to complete our challenge. We got 2 options to do our octopus, one was to print a image of a octopus and use our pencil to colour in or use a online colouring. My octopus is just a normal octopus, I chose this octopus because it’s simple and easy to figure out which marine animal it is. I enjoyed doing this activity because we get to use our art skills and learn more about them. Something I found challenging was figuring out what colour I am going to choose for the octopus.

3 facts about octopus,

  • They are very smart
  • They have 3 hearts and blue blood instead of red
  • They have powerful camouflage.

Legs Tally – Step it up

For this summer learning journey task we got a challenge to learn about centipede. One interesting fact I learnt was that centipedes live in dark damp places like logs rocks and in basements, and they are venomous. I enjoyed this task because I didnt really know about centipedes and it was interesting learning about them.

Legs Legs Legs? – Kick Start

Mosha is an elephant who stood on a landmine when she was a baby (7 months) and her front leg was destroyed people thought she would never survive but then a group of people worked together to create a new leg for her. For this Summer Learning Journey activity we got given a challenge to design a prosthetic leg for Mosha. We got to get creative and add different patterns and designs of our own! I chose a moon and sunlight type of mood because I thought it would relate to the days and nights that Mosha got doubted by the people who thought she wouldnt survive. I enjoyed this task because it was really fun getting creative.

Procedural Text

For our inquiry task, we did dinosaurs, we got into groups of two or three and then made dinosaurs out of paper, and we made our own instructions with paper and we had Coloured paper, glu, a pencil, and a ruler, also we made a proderul text to tell everyone what to do if they want to make a parasaurolophus dinosaur, i hope you like it.

Malala Yousafzai

Thank you

LI: To identify the main arguments Malala presents for education and peace.

For this task we have been handed in the challenge of making a poster on one of Malala Yousafzais key messages in her speech, when she made when she turnt 16 years of age. She was a protester that fought for woman’s justice to have the oppurtuntiy to be educated, and she also mentions is her speech the Taliban and the things in humanity that make it bad ! This included poverty, racism, social injustice, racial bias, gender bias and much more. She called upon the many leaders to change their political view, and thanking the people who were praying for her, and the ones that helped her recover from when she had got shot on the left side of her face. What I found interesting is that she did’nt let anything define her on what she is and didnt let anyone put her down !

AI Movie

LI: To use our knowledge about dinosaurs in creative ways

For inquiry we had been researching about our chosen dinosaurs on what they look like, what their habitat was, what they ate, who their predators were, and how they protected themselves from those conniving predators. The dinosaur that I had been randomly given from an egg was an Ankylosaurus which was a friendly herbivore, who ate shrubs and lived near water sources, and in upland formations, but in this particular experiment to show our creative thinking skills we were handed in the challenge of creating an image of our dinosaur without typing its name in its prompt, the we had to get on to making our own AI movie ( 6 second ) about our dinosaurs, using the program https://hailuoai.video . I enjoyed this challenge because I had to make loads of test prompts trying to make it an Ankylosaurus, and most of them were funny results !

Trip to Auckland War Memorial Museum

For our inquiry we had the topic of Volcanoes so went to the museum to put our topic to an end. When we went to the museum we had a space for learning and in that learning space we were having a reminder on what volcanoes worked like, we then had been challenged to organise the type of rock from the volcano in order, then we did a Backpack challenge where we had to pack all the necessary items into the bag within 30 seconds. The items were backpack toys can of food hole punch torch can opener pan gloves cat muesli bar cat food goggles bottle of water tea towel first aid kit mask and a colouring book .My group shoved everything but the cat because we ‘ forgot ‘ the cat and decided to take the cat food. Even we were walking around the different galleries going from WW2 to imaginarium, weird and wonderful and lastly NZ protests and politics, we were learning different things, and a fact that I found interesting was that whenever someone would spot an enemy, there would be a flagman giving a signal to the bell person, which then would ring the bell above to warn them ! What I learnt from the class time was that whenever there were volcanic bombs it was basically these big chunks of lava, ejecting in a high altitude and then coming down at great speed, twirling whilst its cooling down !

Paired Research Challenge

LI: to research questions about your dinosaur including their habitat, diet, predators, and protection.

Our challenge was to create a DLO that tells others about the dinosaur we found when we excavated our dinosaur egg . My partner and I found the skeleton of a Parasaurolophus and we learnt some interesting facts about it. Something I learnt is that the Parasaurolophus are herbivores. Something I found interesting was that the Parasaurolophus was conered by a predator it would use its size to trample and stomp the predator.

Dinosaur eggs

LI: To understand how scientists discover, record and learn from fossils.

For our reasearches on our chosen dinosaur eggs, we got set a challenge and imagined that we were Mary annings, a paleontologist, had found some dinosaur eggs in the bushes, then ecavatng the rare phenomenon, and taking a photograph of these eggs. We opened them up and inside was our dinosaur that was now our new project so after opening them and taking that photograph, we used that photo graph and went onto Adobe Express to edited our image to what we thought it might’ve looked like in a old-fashioned picture type, after our reasearches on the different dinosaurs me and my group of three had found out we had a Parasaurolophus on the lose !  Something interesting we found out was that they are herbivores so they eat plants which was basically their surroundings and I found that interesting because I know they didnt go starving unless there was a predator on the loose. I enjoyed this task because we got to generate our image into a better photo, and opening the egg because it was fun opening it and imagining we were paleontologists.

RISE UP: The Story of the Dawn Raids and the Polynesian Panthers

LI: To evaluate (form an opinion) the text and respond to the provocation

For reading we read the text RISE UP: The Story of the Dawn Raids and the Polynesian Panthers and after scanning through this important knowledge, we had been asked to create a DLO that goes through and discusses both perspectives of this event that had happened. What I found interesting was that they had mini pamphlets, that gave a brief expression of what your rights were ,which was very cool !
