The Alan Duff charitable Foundation known as Duffy books in homes, it was improved to help break the cycle of bookless among children at schools like ours throughout New Zealand. In 1992 Alan Duff visited a school in Hastings and realised the children there came from bookless homes, These kids without any books of their own they didnt find reading as interesting. Alan wanted to do something about children not having books in homes, he knew it was important for all kids for all kids to enjoy reading books. Ever since then all over Aotearoa have been giving books for them to take home.
In order to celebrate Duffy’s 30th birthday the whole school made library boxes to have very special place with their books in at home, and a long with the library boxes we made party hats. The painting group: Keira, Armani, Dalilah, and Bethany made a human sized Duffy. Most students were helping to decorate the hall for an amazing day. We had many visitors come and help celebrate the amazing day with us, they had talked about how books helped them and why this celebration is important to them. We sang happy birthday for Duffy and sang the song to end the assembly off.
This celebration was delightful because I enjoyed everything about it including painting the giant Duffy in the making.
