Malala Yousafzai

Thank you

LI: To identify the main arguments Malala presents for education and peace.

For this task we have been handed in the challenge of making a poster on one of Malala Yousafzais key messages in her speech, when she made when she turnt 16 years of age. She was a protester that fought for woman’s justice to have the oppurtuntiy to be educated, and she also mentions is her speech the Taliban and the things in humanity that make it bad ! This included poverty, racism, social injustice, racial bias, gender bias and much more. She called upon the many leaders to change their political view, and thanking the people who were praying for her, and the ones that helped her recover from when she had got shot on the left side of her face. What I found interesting is that she did’nt let anything define her on what she is and didnt let anyone put her down !

Once a Panther

LI: To identify the key historical context and events related to the Polynesian Panthers and the Dawn Raids as depicted in the graphic novel.

For our reading we read the text ‘ Once a Panther ‘ a graphic novel that narrates New Zealand’s history about the Polynesian Dawn Raids and how it looked, felt and probably sounded like when becoming a victim to these dawn raids ! After our concentrated reading and guided reading doc, we had been gifted the task of making our own comic strip, that illustrates another example of prejudice, racism or stereotypical behavior towards people, in this practice we learnt how to use dialogue speech bubbles properly ! What I found challenging about this challenge was trying to create my own, because I never really experienced any harsh racism comments, but it was interesting finding out peoples experience with racial behavior directed to themselves, or to one of their family members !

RISE UP: The Story of the Dawn Raids and the Polynesian Panthers

LI: To evaluate (form an opinion) the text and respond to the provocation

For reading we read the text RISE UP: The Story of the Dawn Raids and the Polynesian Panthers and after scanning through this important knowledge, we had been asked to create a DLO that goes through and discusses both perspectives of this event that had happened. What I found interesting was that they had mini pamphlets, that gave a brief expression of what your rights were ,which was very cool !

‘Shameful stain on NZ history’: Polynesian Panthers push for dawn raids apology

LI: To evaluate (form an opinion) the text and respond to the provocation

For reading we were given the task to read a text explaining the polynesian dawn raids, and how it affected people. Then after reading the text we had to form a DLO about the provacation on , if the government of today ( 2021 ) apoligise for the mishaps of the government (1969). During this task we had a lot of reasons to think why and why they shouldn’t of had done this, but ultimatley we all came to the conclusion of agreeing on they should of apoligised because without the confirmation of their wrong doings, the next generation will probably carry on the generational trauma . Something I found interesting was that when Jacinda Aderm was apoligising they put a mat ontop of her head and it was lifted off, making it very interesting to watch because it was the first time I witnessed such a thing ! I really enjoyed this because we were learning about the past of NZ and acknowledging on what people have done to our culture and what they’re still doing.

Diary WW1

LI: To retell an event in history through the fictional eyes of someone who was there

For literacy we have been looking at the events that took place at ANZAC during WW1. We reaserched photos and saw many awful things the soldiers had to go through in war, we also looked at videos of what life was like in the trenches, we also explored Walking with ANZACS website and we read Hami Grace’s diary. Doing this helped us create our own diarys and helped us create an image of what we thought WW1 was like. Once our diary was done we got great feedback from Mrs Anderson, after we used Google vids to recorded our diary, I enjoyed this because it helped me learn about history and what happened in the past.

Dot to Dot Connections

LI: To draw the lines between the words to show how the connections you have made.

For reading me and my group did a dot to dot connection about the kuaka bird. In order to do this task we found  7 words that relate to the kuaka. Then we connceted the words for example: Migration and Habitat a connection between those words would be that they migrate for a better and safe enviorment, because the kuaka migrate from New Zealand to Alsaka to find a new better environment for a habitat. After we had done that we came back to it and added more information to keep it up to date on it.

Mapping the Migratory Flight of the Kuaka

LI: To use Google My Maps to show the migratory flight path of the Kuaka.

For this task we learnt about the Kuaka bird and where it travels daily around New Zealand. I used google maps to create this migration map. What helped me during this task is my group and I collaborated during this task and we helped each other out. A main question we have is why do they migrate? They migrate for the season because when it starts to get cold in New Zealand they go to Alaska and then it goes the same way when it starts to get cold in Alaska.  They have one refuel during their migration and its between Japan and china coast. A interesting fact about the Kuaka bird is that they fly up to 12,000 kilometers from Alaska to New Zealand.

The Kuaka

LI: To create an infographic that tells others about the migration of the kuaka

Recently we have been learning about the Kuaka or the Bar Tailed Godwit and they’re long migration. For this task we were creating a infographic about the Kuaka bird. While doing this task and learning about this amazing Bird I found out that they stand on one leg to preserve energy to me that’s really interesting because not all birds can stand on one leg like they can as well as travelling that far and only having one refuel stop. From this Google draw I can see that I gained more knowledge then I knew before about this bird.

Working in groups

LI: To understand that everyone has a role to play when we are working in groups.

For this task I learnt that working with and from each other is an amazing learning experience to learn from others. Our task was to learn about the Kuaka bird and to learn from each other so we could put our knowledge together and get to know more about the kuaka. Collaborating in this activity helped us because again we used our knowledge and put them into one main idea and because talking to each other helps you in your learning time as for being individual you can’t create more ideas or better ideas, and because if you needed help there would be no one to talk to or to help you as for working in a group may help you get better in learning time and because when you don’t know what you are doing, it’s good to talk to each other and get different ideas from each other. Something we learnt as a group from each other is that the Kuaka are always in flocks as they migrate from New Zealand to Alaska, and Alaska to New Zealand. On the way they refuel in Asia mainly on the Chinese coast, their diet is molluscs, worms, and aquatic insects. We got to ask questions during this task about what we wondered, in the comments. In LS2 we learn best when we learn from each other, collaborating helps us because we get better ideas.

What Learning Should Look Like in LS2

LI: To co-construct ways we can make the most of our learning time in LS2

At the start of the 2025 learning year LS2 had a discussion about how we could make the most of our learning time. For this this task we got into to groups and collaborated together and I collaborated with Melle, CJ, Tejal, Antonia, River, and Taisorn which I enjoyed because we were giving each other ideas and collaborating together. We also gave each other the expectations that were meant to do around the class and what are expected to do. One of our expectations around the class is communicating and sharing ideas with each other, the communication is helping us to gain confidence and make friends, and sharing ideas with each other also helps us gaining confidence and it helps ideas get into bigger ones. This activity was fun because we joined together and had fun as well as learning together.
